Surfers' Paradise

surfThe Central Pacific Coast is just a two-hour drive from San Jose. Jaco is renowned for its year-round swells and happening party scene. The beach town is packed with surf schools, like the one in Tamarindo pictured here, and shops and is a great spot for both novice and seasoned surfers. A few kilometers south of Jaco, Playa Hermosa offers a longer break, bigger waves and a more tranquil atmosphere. Farther south, the small beach town of Dominical lures boarders with consistent breaks. It is less developed than Jaco or Tamarindo and has a laid-back vibe. The Central and South Pacific beaches are best from May to November (the rainy season).

South Pacific Coast
The tiny village of Pavones, located on the Golfo Dulce, is known around the globe as having the longest left point break in the world. The break has been recorded to last up to three minutes on a slow, south swell. The biggest waves are from April through October, which is the rainy season in Pavones.

Huge waves can be found on the isolated beaches of Cabo Matapalo, situated on the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula. Facilities are minimal in this undeveloped area, so surfers should bring their own boards. Playa Zancudo and Drake Bay also have some nice beach breaks.

Not a Surfer, Try the Sport Fishing

Costa Rica's deep blue waters rife with marlin, mahi mahi and sailfish are a Mecca for sport fishermen seeking world-class action. Fishing varies in each region according to season, but something is always biting in Costa Rica any month of the year.

Northern Pacific (Guanacaste Province)

Year-round action makes the beach towns of Tamarindo and Playa del Coco hot spots among anglers. Flamingo is another favorite and boasts the largest marina in Costa Rica. Flamingo also hosts an annual sport fishing tournament in July, when the tuna and sailfish are running. Other common catches include blue, black and striped marlin, yellowfin tuna and dorado. Marlin are pulled 12 months a year, and peak times are from November to mid-March, August and September. Sailfish are caught year-round, but April through August are the best months. Tuna is also landed every month, peaking between August and October. Boat charters and multi-day package trips are widely available.

Central Pacific

Sport fishing charters are extremely popular in Quepos and Jaco, both renowned for their warm waters and abundance of black snook, cubera snapper, dorado and tuna, as well as Pacific sailfish and marlin. The peak season for sailfish in Quepos is from December through April. Charters in Quepos can be arranged from $450 for a half-day to $1200 for a full day of fishing. The coastal towns of Puntarenas and Dominical also offer fishing charters. Wahoo, dorado, tuna and marlin are fished off Domical from mid-December through April.
